It is a clear colourless, flammable hydrocarbon that is completely miscible with water and organic solvents and very hydroscopic.

Major types of ethanol: There are two major types: (i) Anhydrous ethanol (2) Hydrous ethanol

Anhydrous ethanol: It is also known as fuel ethanol and is used as a solvent for industrial applications where water will not react with other chemicals. It is majorly used in blending premium motor spirit (PMS) to obtain products like E-10, E-20 etc. The product means 10% ethanol and 90% crude oil. The essence is to slow down the effects of global warming because crude oil contains CO2 and ethanol contains oxygen.

Hydrous ethanol: It is also known as food grade ethanol or wet ethanol and it is the most concentrated grade of ethanol that can be produced by simple distillation.

Uses of Ethanol: It has several uses and these are some of them:

  • In the manufacture of alcoholic drinks e.g. whisky, Vodka etc.
  • As solvent for paints, varnish, drugs, chemicals etc.
  • As fluid in thermometers
  • In preserving biological specimens
  • Production of cosmetics, body care products etc.
  • Beverages
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Production of self flavoured spirits like brandy, gin, creams, cognac
  • Food industry, vitamins, flavours, mouth wash, blood products etc.

Demand for Ethanol: The demand for ethanol in Nigeria is about 500million litre per year and only about 5% of this is met locally. There are about 3 major local producers and they are: Unichem Industrial Ltd at Kogi State, Nigeria Distilleries Ltd at Igbesa Ogun state and Euroglobal Ltd at Ogun state. Demand is so High that more producers are urgently needed.

Global demands are drastically on the increase dueto globsl warming and Industrial applications.

Production Process:

Production of food grade ethanol involves four strategic sections:

  1. Crushing Section: In this section the chips or tubers are crushed into small particles and then reduced into powder or slurry.
  • Liquefaction and Saccharification: This section is a chemical process because the starch is turned into glucose. Liquefying enzymes lower the starch viscosity and further hydrolyze it completely into glucose.
  • Fermentation Section: This is equally chemical because the glucose is turned into alcohol and CO2. The yeast breaks down the sugar into alcohol and CO2. There are two types of fermentation, the batch and the continuous fermentation. We use the later.
  • Distillation: The alcohol content and quality are improved, impurities are discharged and by products are obtained. The technology applied is the Five Column Distillation Process.

By Products: Production of ethanol involves by products like carbon dioxide, fusel oil, industrial alcohol, biogas and fertilizer. These products have important applications in many industries like soft drinks, fire extinguisher, perfumes, body care products, paints etc.

Feedstock: The major raw material required is cassava tubers. About 8tons of tubers will produce one ton of ethanol and about 2.5tons of cassava chips will produce one ton of ethanol. We recommend chips for production because they contain more alcohol than tubers.

There are other raw materials like enzymes, yeasts, chemicals, water etc. About 1 litre of ethanol will require over 20litres of water.

Why chips are better than tubers in Ethanol Production

The alcoholic content of dry chips is 12.5% while that of fresh tubers is 8.5%. Chips yield more alcohol.

  • Tubers consume more water than chips. Crushing alone requires 0.8tons of water more than with chips and production requires 6tons of water per ton of ethanol more than chips.
  • To obtain the same quantity of ethanol, the size of the plant for fresh tubers must be almost 1.5times the size of the chips plant in liquefaction, Saccharification, fermentation and mash column.
  • This will make the cost of the plant to be more expensive by 25-30%. It will also consume more steam and electricity thereby increasing the operating overhead.
  • Chips are easier and better to store and handle than tubers. When tubers go rancid, it affects the quality and quantity of the product.
  • In all, chips produce more ethanol per unit ton with less overhead and running cost. It is easier and better to operate and the plant is less expensive.
